The Abylkhan Kasteyev State Museum of Arts of the Republic of Kazakhstan will host a presentation of the catalog "The Art of Japan. XVII-XXI centuries." and the opening of the exhibition from the museum's collections.

On May 18, 2024, at 16.00, within the framework of the International Museum Day, the Abylkhan Kasteyev State Museum of Arts of the Republic of Kazakhstan will host a presentation of the catalog "The Art of Japan. XVII-XXI centuries." and the opening of the exhibition from the museum's collections.

"We are convinced that the publication of the Japanese art catalog from the collection of the leading art museum of Kazakhstan will become an additional bridge in strengthening and activating international cultural interaction between our countries," said museum director Gulaim Musagulovna Zhumabekova. The collection includes about 250 works, many of which have been transferred to the museum since 1936 from the State Museum of Oriental Arts, the Central State Museum of Kazakhstan, the Tselinograd Regional Museum of Local History and etc. After studying this collection, the researchers prepared a catalog "The Art of Japan of the XVII-XXI centuries", the publication of which was supported by KONICA MINOLTA KAZAKHSTAN, a company with a 150-year history, a world leader in the office and professional digital printing. "We sincerely believe that this publication, which for the first time demonstrates the collection of Japanese art from the museum's collection, will serve as inspiration and a source of new ideas for museum staff, specialists, connoisseurs and a wide range of admirers of Japanese culture," says Pavel Shalaginov, head of KONICA MINOLTA representative office in Central Asia.

The visitors will be presented with applied and fine arts, which introduce the most complex technologies for the manufacture of magnificent bronze products and porcelain. The exhibition shows graphic works, art works made of metal, ceramics, wood, fabric, papier-mache, bone, glass and paper, traditional dolls, various accessories, decorative fans and much more. Each art piece is the finest work imbued with infinite respect for history, canons and continuity. Each piece is deeply symbolic – red-headed cranes and curving pines carry the wish of a long life and indomitable fortitude; the Kokeshi doll is considered the embodiment of the Japanese craving for inner beauty, given as a sign of friendship, sympathy or about a pleasant event. The exhibition will feature works of Japanese art from the collection of Dosym Satpayev, a Kazakhstani political scientist, publicist, publisher and enthusiastic collector of Japanese antiquities.

This exhibition project provides an opportunity to touch the infinitely beautiful, rich, original culture of the land of the rising sun.

Another highlight of the International Museum Day will be the opening of the exhibition "The Bride’s Story" from the manga series by the famous artist Kaoru Mori. It invites viewers to plunge into the rich history of Central Asia of the XIX century. In 2022, this manga was exhibited at the Kyoto International Manga Museum as part of the "anniversary project dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and the five Central Asian countries." The manga exhibition in Abylkhan Kasteyev State Museum of Arts of the Republic of Kazakhstan was implemented with the assistance of the Kadokawa Corporation and the Embassy of Japan in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

As part of the annual "Museum Night" campaign, a solemn presentation of the catalog, the opening of exhibitions, a performance by students of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University from the Faculty of the Far East, concert performances, a tour of the exposition in three languages (Kazakh, Russian, English), and masterclasses in origami, calligraphy, and spoken Japanese will take place from 16:00 to 19:00.
